Government expected to introduce 'English veto' in British Parliament

LONDON, July 11 (UPI) -- English members of the British Parliament would have the final say on English affairs under a plan being considered by the government, The Independent reports.

The Labor Party appears to be strongly opposed to the proposal for an English veto, the newspaper said. The party is strong in Scotland and Wales with 67 of its current 257 members of the Westminster Parliament coming from outlying parts of the United Kingdom.

Labor called the plan a "hare-brained scheme" Wednesday.

The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish assemblies currently make their own decisions on education, the National Health Service, transportation and other domestic issues. At the same time, their MPs at Westminster have the same say as English representatives for England.

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition is expected to introduce the plan for an English veto in the fall. It would allow English MPs to reject legislation affecting only England even if it receives a majority in the House of Commons.
