British fugitive from drug charges collared in Athens bar

ATHENS, Greece, July 11 (UPI) -- A suspected British drug trafficker is awaiting extradition in Greece after being arrested in a bar in an affluent Athens suburb, police said.

Kevin Hanley, 50, was pursued in a joint operation by the Greek police and the British Serious Organized Crime Agency, The Sun reported Wednesday. His Greek girlfriend, Chryssi Minadaki, 44, was also arrested.

Police said Hanley was in Molly Malone's, an Irish bar in Glyfada, expecting to watch the Lions, a British and Irish rugby team, play Australia. Glyfada is both a resort and a residential neighborhood favored by rich Greeks.

"A SOCA officer walked up to him and said, 'Hello Kevin.' He looked shocked as he tried to work out what was happening. But Hanley quickly realized the game was up and he didn't put up a fight," a source told the Sun.

Hanley was allegedly a top associate of Brian Wright, now serving 30 years for running a major drug operation. Police seized cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines valued at 10 million pounds (about $15 million) and 2 million pounds ($3.5 million) in the London district of Fulham last year while investigating Hanley.
