CAIRO, July 6 (UPI) -- The trial of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was put on hold by the judge for more than a month Saturday as the nation's political upheaval persisted.

The North Cairo Criminal Court adjourned the trial amid heavy security until Aug. 17.

Ahram Online said hundreds of police officers were on hand to provide security for Saturday's proceedings at a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo.

Mubarak, along with six aides and former interior minister Habib El-Adly, are being re-tried for their roles in the 2011 uprising that left more than 800 demonstrators dead and resulted in the toppling of Mubarak's regime. The government that replaced Mubarak was itself deposed by the military this week.

The trial adjourned with a motion by the defense to dismiss the charges against El-Adly. Ahram Online said El-Adly's lawyer told the court his client had reached the maximum number of days he could be held while his case was under investigation.

The motion will be ruled on after prosecutors have a chance to review the documentation.

Ahram Online said two of Murbarak's sons, who face corruption charges, were ordered released earlier in the trial for the same reason but their release was blocked because they still faced charges in a separate case.
