McCain in Afghanistan on unannounced visit

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 4 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., arrived in Afghanistan on an unannounced visit Thursday, a coalition spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said McCain, a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, is expected to meet with U.S. troops, CNN reported.

His visit comes as the United States prepares to reduce its presence in Afghanistan.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force is to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but will keep some troops in the country to help train Afghans and carry out counter-terrorism operations as needed.
