Female dairy farmer executed in China for poisoning milk

LANZHOU, China, July 3 (UPI) -- A female dairy farmer has been executed by lethal injection for adding nitrite to milk that killed three children, a court in China said Wednesday.

The farmer, Ma Xiuling, was sentenced to death in November 2011 for the death of a 1-month-old baby and two toddlers, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

In addition to the deaths, more than 30 people were sickened by the tainted milk.

Ma was convicted along with her husband, Wu Guangquan who received a sentence of life in prison for purchasing the nitrite.

Pingliang Municipal Intermediate People's Court said the couple added the industrial salt to milk produced by a business rival in China's Gansu Province.

Gansu Provincial High People's Court rejected the couple's appeal in June 2012.
