JERUSALEM, July 2 (UPI) -- The Israeli army said it is investigating the death of a young Palestinian in Dura as clashes erupted during an army raid.

The dead youth was identified as Muatazz Sharawnah, 19, a cadet in the Palestinian Security Academy in Jericho, Ma'an news agency said. A doctor at the Hebron hospital confirmed the death Tuesday to the news agency, saying the youth had been hit with an expanding bullet known as a dum-dum.

A statement released by the Israeli army spokesman said before dawn Tuesday, soldiers operating in Dura near Hebron in the West Bank came under heavy barrages of stones and were forced to use riot dispersal methods.

A Palestinian jumped on a military jeep during the incident and a soldier opened fire in the direction of the suspect's legs but was unable to confirm a hit, Haaretz said.

The Israeli army said it was later notified a Palestinian injured in the clash died in a hospital.
