JAKARTA, July 2 (UPI) -- The death toll from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia's Aceh province rose to at least 22, authorities said Wednesday.
The quake Tuesday in the quake-prone province on the northern tip of Sumatra Island also injured more than 210 people and inflicted much damage, the country's National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.
Kyodo News Agency quoted officials that the bodies of many of the victims were found in the two worst-affected areas in the central part of the province.
"Thousands of buildings and houses were damaged," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, The Wall Street Journal reported.
China's Xinhua News Agency, quoting an agency spokesman, said the shallow quake damaged about 1,500 homes, government office buildings and mosques. Most of the wounded people were in Aceh Tengah district, he said, adding all of the injured persons in Aceh province were being treated in hospitals.
Relief and rescue efforts were continuing, the report said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck inland at a depth of just over six miles in the mountainous Bener Meriah district.
In 2004, the province was hit by a massive earthquake which set off a tsunami across Asia, which killed more than 200,000 people.
