BEIJING, June 26 (UPI) -- A meeting of the presidents of South Korea and China will be closely watched for their policy coordination regarding North Korea, analysts say.
President Park Geun-hye of South Korea will arrive in Beijing Thursday to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a meeting that comes amid faltering efforts by North Korea -- under apparent pressure from China to moderate Pyongyang's volatile behavior -- to engage South Korea and the United States, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
Although Park mentioned Monday the summit is an opportunity to present "our concerted best efforts to lead North Korea to a genuine dialogue," analysts question how much the two heads of state will agree on influencing North Korea, the newspaper said.
The newspaper said analysts say a key sticking point will be China's call for the resumption of six-party talks stalled since 2009, which include the United States, Russia and Japan, to provide North Korea incentives to abandon its nuclear program. The United States and South Korea agree North Korea must first take action to demonstrate it is moving to roll back its nuclear program, in line with previous commitments.
