Police in Greece searching for five fugitives

NAFPAKTOS, Greece, June 24 (UPI) -- Authorities in Greece are searching for five fugitives, three of whom escaped from a prison during a violent attack, officials said.

Police in the western prefecture of Fokida, along with federal authorities, are searching for the men, who are believed hiding in mountains near Nafpaktos, Ekathimerini.com reported Monday.

Three of the men escaped from a prison in Trikala in March during an attack at the prison while the other two allegedly helped them, authorities said. All five of the men are Albanian nationals and have been linked to the death of a woman, who was caught in the middle of a shootout between the fugitives and police in Corinth in April.

They are also suspected of killing a police officer earlier this month in Distomo and carrying out a string of armed robberies.

Thousands of police officers have been sent to Fokida to look for the suspects, who were spotted there last week.
