BEIJING, June 19 (UPI) -- Kim Kye Gwan, North Korea's senior nuclear negotiator, and Zhang Yesui, China's vice foreign minister, called Wednesday for a restart of six-party talks.
The two met in Beijing, CNN reported. While few details were released, they issued a statement saying the talks should resume to "peacefully solve nuclear issues through dialogue."
The meeting comes at a time when relations between China and North Korea are strained, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported. China is one of North Korea's few allies, but it supported United Nations sanctions after the North conducted a nuclear test in February.
Representatives of Japan, South Korea and the United States met later Wednesday in Washington to discuss a joint approach to new talks on North Korea's nuclear program. Russia is the sixth party to the talks.
