Bombs, shootings kill 20 in Iraq

BASRA, Iraq, June 16 (UPI) -- Police said at least 20 people were killed and 111 others wounded in a series of shootings and explosions in Iraq Sunday.

At least 11 car bombs exploded in cities south of Baghdad, including one at a vegetable market place in Najaf that killed two civilians and wounded 18 others, Xinhua reported.

Other explosions took place in the cities of Aziziyah, Nasriyah, Mahmoudiyah and Mahawil.

Basra experienced two car bomb explosions.

In northern Iraq, six policeman who were guarding an oil pipeline were killed when gunmen broke into their outpost.

A roadside bomb also struck a police patrol in the city of Tuz-Khurmato, killing two policeman and wounding another.

There was no immediate word of any terrorist group claiming responsibility for the attacks.
