Inter-Korean talks called off without explanation

SEOUL, June 11 (UPI) -- High-level talks between North and South Korea, set to start in less than 24 hours, have been called off, the government of South Korea said Tuesday.

No clear reason was given for scrapping the government-to-government talks set for Wednesday, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Observers were hoping the talks might lead to easing tension on the volatile Korean Peninsula.

Preliminary talks on Sunday laying out technical and administrative details went smoothly, government officials reported.

Spokesman Kim Hyung-suk of the South Korean Unification Ministry said Sunday's meetings were calm and no contentious issues came up.
