Wildfire forces 200 to flee in Manitoba

ILFORD, Manitoba, June 10 (UPI) -- A wildfire in northern Manitoba forced the evacuation of about 200 people, officials said Sunday.

The forest fire, which broke out Thursday, forced about 100 residents of the First Nations settlement of Ilford out of their homes and 100 employees of Manitoba Hydro to leave their work camp near Gillam, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The Manitoba Hydro workers were expected to be able to return to work by Monday, company spokesman Glenn Schneider told the CBC.

A section of Highway 280 that had been closed because of poor visibility caused by the fire's smoke had been reopened.
