The insider attack occurred at a base for troops of the International Security Assistance Force in Paktika province near the border with Pakistan, Afghan military officers said. An Afghan company commander, began shooting at fellow soldiers during lunch in the base's lunchroom, the officers said.

He was shot and killed by other soldiers in the lunchroom, the BBC reported.

ISAF confirmed the attacker was wearing a uniform of the Afghan National Army but, in line with military policy, did not provide further details.

The Italian soldier was killed in Farah province in western Afghanistan when two men on a motorcycle threw a grenade at a convoy. Two other Italian soldiers were injured, said a spokesman for the provincial governor.

Other reports said the attack occurred after the soldiers left their armored vehicle and were walking on the street.
