Police captain dies in protests, calm returns to Istanbul

ISTANBUL, Turkey, June 6 (UPI) -- A police officer has been killed in violent protests in Turkey, but officials said Istanbul was quiet Thursday after days of protests.

Tensions in the city were calmed after Turkish officials apologized for excessive use of police and met with protest leaders camped out in the city's Taksim Square, CNN reported.

However, a demonstration by about 1,000 protesters in Adana, about 60 miles away, resulted in the death of a police captain, who reportedly fell off a bridge.

The Adana governor's office said Capt. Mustafa Sari died from injuries incurred Wednesday night.

Two protesters have died and more than 4,300 have been injured in the nationwide disturbances, which started as a sit-in against government plans to bulldoze the last park in Istanbul to clear the way for a shopping mall.

Protesters have demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said Monday protesters were members of "marginal groups."

While Erdogan was traveling in Africa, the president and deputy prime minister tried to calm secular Turks by assuring them their lifestyle would be respected.

A tweet from the prime minister's office quoted him as saying: "Sensitivities of people for environmental issues are abused. We already expressed our sorrow for excessive use of force."

Another tweet said, "Unlawful methods for claiming rights can't be tolerated."
