Arrests made in alleged rape of U.S. tourist in India

MANALI, India, June 6 (UPI) -- Three men were arrested Thursday, accused of gang-raping an American woman in the Indian resort of Manali, police said.

Himachal Pradesh police said two of the men were arrested near their homes and the third was arrested as he tried to evade capture by traveling with a woman and wearing "garb of a married couple," The New York Times reported.

The victim, 30, said she was raped early Tuesday as she returned from Vashisht, about two miles north of Manali. She said she was offered a ride in a truck and was taken to a secluded spot where she alleged the three men raped her. She also said she was robbed.

Police said they found the vehicle in which they say the rape occurred. The stolen items were not recovered.

The owner of the truck said he had hired one of the suspects as a day laborer recently, police said.

"The arrests have been made on the basis of circumstantial evidence, such as identification of the truck, based on the victim's account," Vinod Kumar Dhawan, police superintendent in the Kullu district, told the Times in a telephone interview.

Dhawan said the victim will have an opportunity to identify the suspects when they go before a district magistrate.
