Fourteen dead in attack on bus in western Afghan desert

RAMADI, Afghanistan, June 5 (UPI) -- Gunmen waylaid a bus traveling through the desert of western Afghanistan Wednesday and killed all 14 people aboard, provincial police say.

Eleven border police and three civilians were killed after the vehicle stopped at a fake checkpoint near the town of al-Nukhaib, about 150 miles southwest of Baghdad, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

The victims were traveling from Karbala, a holy Shiite city about 70 miles south of the capital city to the Iraqi border near al-Nukhaib in Anbar province at the time of the attack.
