Deadly fire prompts China to overhaul safety rules

BEIJING, June 5 (UPI) -- China said Wednesday it will begin a national overhaul of workplace safety rules after a fire at a plant in a northeastern province killed 120 people.

The State Council said in a statement an "iron hand" would be used against violators, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Industries such as coal mining and chemical manufacturing will be targeted, as well as labor-intensive companies, the statement said.

Government staff and the heads of production facilities will be punished if they are found to be deficient in carrying out their duties.
