U.N., Japan agree to step up fight against drugs, human trafficking

TOKYO, June 3 (UPI) -- The United Nations and Japan signed an agreement to fight illegal drugs and human trafficking, agreeing to enhance cooperation, a U.N. agency said Monday.

The Joint Action Plan of Action between the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime and Japan, signed during the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, also covered enhanced cooperation in terrorism and cybercrime in Africa and Southeast Asia, the United Nations said in a release.

The U.N. agency and the Japanese government have a "long and fruitful history of cooperation across the globe" in countering illicit narcotic drugs, combating terrorism and strengthening crime prevention and criminal justice, U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime Executive Director Yury Fedotov said.

"We know that insecurity and conflict fuel crime while drugs and crime fuel conflict and undermine security," Fedotov said. "Addressing these threats can contribute to building peace and promoting human security within and across regions."
