Ali Kosheib involved in Darfur slaughter, rights group says

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 3 (UPI) -- A Sudanese military commander wanted by the International Criminal Court participated in deadly attacks in Darfur in April, Human Rights Watch said.

The research and advocacy group, based in New York, said in a statement Monday Ali Kosheib, a former militia leader now in a high-ranking position with Sudan's Central Reserve Police, was involved in attacks on ethnic Salamat communities in central Darfur province.

"Witnesses place Ali Kosheib at the scene of recent killing, burning and looting in Darfur," said Daniel Bekele, Africa director of Human Rights Watch.

The statement said heavily armed members of the Misserita and Ta'isha ethnic groups have attacked ethnic Salamat communities, killing more than 100 people.
