Reconnaissance drone crashes in Somalia

BULO MARER, Somalia, May 28 (UPI) -- An unmanned surveillance drone aircraft crashed Tuesday in Bulo Marer, Somalia, a town controlled by al-Shabaab forces, local officials said.

The drone contained cameras and was allegedly conducting reconnaissance. Al-Shabaab fighters are in possession of the wreckage, the Somali independent news agency Garowe Online reported.

No reason was reported for the crash.

Although the drone's origin and ownership are unknown, officials in Somalia say the United States has upgraded an airfield in nearby Arba Minch, Ethiopia, from which U.S. Reaper drones conduct counter-terrorism operations in Somalia, Garowe Online said.
