PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKIY, Russia, May 24 (UPI) -- An earthquake of at least 6.7-magnitude struck the Sea of Okhotsk off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East Friday, officials said.
The quake, which the U.S. Geological survey estimated might have been closer to 8.2-magnitude, could be felt in Moscow, 4,000 miles away and two buildings in the city were evacuated, but there were no reports of injuries or damage at any location.
A tsunami alert was issued and then canceled, officials said.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 244 miles west-northwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, the closest significant center of population, the BBC reported.
The quake was centered at a depth of 385 miles, RIA Novosti reported.
The last time earthquake tremors were felt in Moscow was in 1977, the report said.
