VATICAN CITY, May 22 (UPI) -- An Italian restaurateur climbed down from his perch atop the St. Peter's Basilica dome in Vatican City overnight, police said.
Police said they convinced Marcello Di Finizio to come down, arguing that he could fall to his death, Italy's ANSA news agency reported Wednesday.
Di Finizio, who has twice before climbed the dome as a protest, began his descent from the dome overlooking Vatican City Monday after protesting European Union policies he says could lead to the closure of his restaurant in Trieste.
Di Finizio, 47, climbed down to a window ledge to hang a banner reading, "Stop the massacre, no to the euro."
He staged similar demonstrations in July and October to protest former Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's government and austerity cuts, among other things.
