More than 270 militants arrested over 3-day period in Tunisia

TUNIS, Tunisia, May 22 (UPI) -- Police arrested 274 people over three days for alleged involvement in clashes between Tunisia's police and the militant Ansar al-Sharia, officials said.

The arrests throughout the country were tied to Sunday's clashes in the Tunis suburb of Ettadhamen, officials said.

The Interior Ministry presented the final tally Tuesday during a news conference, Tunisia Live reported. Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Laroui said cartridges, uniforms and nerve gas containers were confiscated.

Among those arrested was Ansar al-Sharia spokesman Seifeddine Rais, who said the organization that advocates implementation of Sharia law, planned to protest in front of the headquarters of the ruling Ennahda Party Friday as a show of support for those arrested, Tunisia Live said.

On Tuesday, the Interior Ministry outlawed Ansar al-Sharia and banned all of its activities.
