Jailed Pussy Riot member declares hunger strike

BEREZNIKI, Russia, May 22 (UPI) -- A member of the Russian feminist punk rock band Pussy Riot said she would go on a hunger strike after not being allowed to attend a parole appeal hearing.

Maria Alyokhina and two other Pussy Riot members were sentenced to two years in prison for performing a "punk prayer" against Russian President Vladimir Putin at a cathedral in central Moscow in February 2012.

Alyokhina was taking part in regional court proceedings via video conference from prison when she refused to continue and barred her defense team from representing her interests, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

She said she would go on a hunger strike after being denied transportation to the courthouse.
