Factory's walkway collapses, 23 injured

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, May 21 (UPI) -- A connecting walkway at a garment factory in Cambodia collapsed into a pond sending 23 employees to hospitals, officials said.

The 30-feet-long walkway collapsed Monday while workers were eating lunch on the structure, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

A pregnant woman, Khem Rany, was among the injured.

"We don't know what happened," she said. "The construction collapsed into the water. I was afraid something would happen to my baby. I cannot swim."

Officials rescued the victims from the water and they were sent to the hospital. The employees' injuries are not expected to be life threatening, the Post said.

The incident comes after a ceiling collapsed Thursday at a Cambodian shoe factory. Two young workers at the factory, an Asics supplier, were killed.

Dave Welsh, of the American Center for International Labor Solidarity, called for widespread reform of factory safety.

"I'm not sure we need any more indications that there must be dramatic improvements," he said.

A recent ILO report indicated that a quarter of garment and footwear factories surveyed were found to have industrial hazards, Welsh said.
