812 arrested for drug trafficking in Golden Triangle region

BEIJING, May 21 (UPI) -- Officials in China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand said they arrested 812 people accused of running drug rings along the Mekong River.

The Mekong River has long been considered a key location for drug trafficking through the opium-producing Golden Triangle Region, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported Monday.

The four countries vowed a crackdown on trafficking in the region in October 2011 after 13 Chinese sailors were killed by gangs along the river.

The most recent arrests and seizures came on Sunday when 1.93 tons of drugs and a batch of firearms and ammunition was confiscated, said Lan Weihong, the Chinese spokesman at the anti-drug mission's headquarters in southwest Yunnan Province.
