Central Newfoundland hit with 22.8 inches of snow

GANDER, Newfoundland, May 20 (UPI) -- Central Newfoundland, in eastern Canada, was struck with a record-breaking snowfall during the weekend, a government meteorologist noted.

Fifty-eight centimeters (22.8 inches) of snow was recorded in Gander, Newfoundland, Saturday and Sunday for the Victoria Day weekend, with peak snowfall on Saturday evening, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"Our normal snowfall for the month of May is just 13 centimeters [5.1 inches], and the highest monthly total in the past was set in 1972. For the whole month [of May 1972] it was 49 centimeters [19.3 inches], so we beat that, over the span of 36 hours," Environment Canada meteorologist Jody Boyd said.

Other parts of the province saw rain, drizzle, fog and cold temperatures, the CBC added.
