Plane catches fire after landing in Moscow

MOSCOW, May 18 (UPI) -- An airplane carrying at least 136 passengers and crew caught fire at a Moscow airport upon landing but no injuries were reported, officials said.

A Boeing 737 operated by UTair, inbound from the southern Russian city Stavropol, landed at 7:48 a.m. Saturday and the plane's landing gear burst into flames, RIA Novosti said.

"The plane's left landing gear leg caught fire upon landing. Preliminary reports suggest the brake wheels were destroyed," a law enforcement source said.

It was unclear whether the figure of 136 included the six crew members. Those aboard were quickly evacuated without incident, passengers said.

Among the passengers were members of the Russian pop group Laskovy Mai returning from a tour.

Moscow's Vnukovo Airport was closed to incoming and outgoing flights until about 10 a.m. as emergency crews doused the flames and worked to remove the plane from the runway.

The flight number was not reported.
