SYDNEY, May 17 (UPI) -- An Australian man who sexually assaulted an elderly Holocaust survivor in 1991 when he was a teenager was sentenced to up to five years in prison Friday.
Robert Paul Webb, 39, could be released in less than a year with credit for time served since his arrest in 2011, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. A judge sentenced him to three to five years.
The victim, 71, was on her way to work when she was attacked in a parking garage in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst. A young man armed with a broken bottle forced her to perform oral sex and then stole her car.
Webb was only identified as a suspect in 2011 through DNA testing. His lawyers tried to argue his deceased brother was the rapist and said the victim's death made a fair trial impossible, but Webb eventually pleaded guilty.
"The victim's ordeal must have been terrifying ... and the conduct of the offender was calculated to humiliate her," Judge Ian McClintock said.
McClintock said he considered Webb's difficult childhood and a long history of drug abuse and said that kind of "repulsive" crime appears to be out of character for him. The judge described Webb, who has spent much of his adult life in jail, as "institutionalized."
