BETHLEHEM, West Bank, May 15 (UPI) -- The Israeli military said several stray rockets from Syria landed in the Golan Heights Wednesday morning but no damage or injuries were reported.
An Israeli Army spokesman told the Palestinian Ma'an News Agency the rockets struck the Mount Hermon area on the Syrian-Israeli border about 6 a.m. local time.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and later annexed it. Technically, Syria and Israel are still at war but the Golan Heights have remained mostly quiet for decades.
As a result of Wednesday's incident, the Israeli military has decided to close off the upper part of Mount Hermon to visitors, Ynetnews.com reported.
Military Chief of Staff Benny Gantz held an emergency assessment meeting with senior officials prior to the closure announcement.
During the past year, the Syrian civil war has occasionally spilled into the Golan Heights and numerous incidents of either mortar or bullet fire have entered Israel.
