HEROR, Iraq, May 14 (UPI) -- The first group of Kurdish militants crossed into northern Iraq early Tuesday as part of a peace process aimed at ending 30 years of conflict, officials said.
The group of some 13 men and women from the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, is the first of an estimated 2,000 Kurdish militants who plan to withdraw from Turkey, Voice of America reported.

The militants began leaving their Turkish bases last week with full withdrawal expected to take three to four months.
The movement is part of a peace deal worked out between jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan and Turkish officials to end one of the world's bloodiest insurgencies.
