PARIS, May 10 (UPI) -- A man who returned to France from Dubai was diagnosed with the deadly SARS-related virus novel coronavirus, the French Health Ministry confirmed.

The unidentified 65-year-old man is in intensive care in a Douai, France, hospital in what the ministry Wednesday called "the first and only confirmed case in France."

However, health officials in the Nord/Pas-de-Calais region of northwestern France said Thursday two other people -- the patient's doctor and a man who shared a hospital room with him -- were undergoing tests after showing symptoms of the disease, related to severe acute respiratory syndrome.

The Health Ministry of the United Arab Emirates, which includes Dubai, said Friday no case of the SARS-like virus had been recorded in the Persian Gulf states, and the ministry is coordinating with France and "closely following the health situation."

The latest outbreak of the novel coronavirus was reported in September, with cases in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany, Britain and now France. It has resulted in 18 deaths, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.
