Woman convicted of murder in fire that killed five in Wales

MOLD, Wales, May 1 (UPI) -- Melanie Smith, convicted in Wales of starting a fire that killed five people, was vilified by her daughter, who said she hopes her mother dies in jail.

Smith, 43, was found guilty of murder Tuesday in Mold Crown Court for starting a fire in a baby carriage while drunk. The blaze killed five people, ages 23, 20, 4, 2 and 15 months, in the apartment above hers, the British tabloid The Sun reported Wednesday.

Although Smith told the court she would never harm a child, her daughter Charlotte, 23, offered a different story, saying her mother pouring boiling water and extinguishing cigarettes on her when she was a child.

"She's evil. We hope she dies in jail," Charlotte said, a reference to herself and her sister Lisa, 24, and brother Jonathon, 22.

"We could have ended up like those babies she killed. This woman's a monster," Jonathon added.

Smith will be sentenced next week, The Sun said.
