Bomb explodes near Syrian prime minister's convoy; bodyguard killed

DAMASCUS, Syria, April 29 (UPI) -- A bomb blast Monday near a convoy carrying Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halki killed a bodyguard and injured others but he was not hurt, officials reported.

The explosion in the Damascus suburb of Mazzeh was called a terrorist attack, the state news agency SANA said.

After the bombing, al-Halki attended a government meeting in the capital, Hezbollah's al-Manar television station reported.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mazzeh in southwest Damascus is located on the Mazzeh highway that leads to a major Syrian air force base and is not far from where the presidential palace is located, CNN said. A number of government and military institutions are located in the area.
