Egyptians hold former Gadhafi aide on weapons charge

CAIRO, April 28 (UPI) -- An Egyptian court has ruled a former close aide to deposed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi will remain in detention despite Libyan demands otherwise.

Ahmed Gadhaf al-Dam, a Libyan-born Egyptian national who moved to Cairo to seek political asylum, was convicted of corruption charges and ordered to serve 30 days in an Egyptian jail. Ahram Online said the term has expired but al-Dam remains in custody over charges he tried to kill the police who arrested him and was spying and harboring unlicensed weapons.

Police who searched his home said al-Dam had recording equipment and guns in his home.

Al-Dam said the items were not his and denied the charges.
