FUKUI, Japan, April 27 (UPI) -- A Japanese nuclear power company said it's close to seeking permission to turn on two power plants shuttered after the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
Kansai Electric Power Co. could apply as early as July to resume power generation at two nuclear reactors in Fukui, Japan, on the island nation's west coast. Company officials said they are finalizing work to bring the plant up to new, stricter safety codes for earthquakes and tsunamis in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, Kyodo News said Saturday.
A nuclear power plant in the city faced several near meltdowns and released mass amounts of nuclear waste and radiation into the air and ground following the devastating quake/tsunami combo in March 2011.
Before they can resume power generation, all nuclear plants must prove to Japanese regulators they're up to the new codes and also receive approval from local municipalities.
