Drug trafficker for Italian mafia arrested in Colombia

MEDELLIN, Colombia, April 26 (UPI) -- Colombian police arrested the alleged head of drug trafficking for Italy's 'Ndrangheta Mafia Friday, ending three years on the run, Italian officials said.

Domenico Trimboli, 39, a Buenos Aires, Argentina, native, was arrested in Medellin, Colombia, after spending years on the Italian Interior Ministry's list of most-wanted and dangerous 'Ndrangheta fugitives, ANSA reported.

Once extradited, he faces 12 years in prison for alleged drug crimes committed in Italy and abroad, Italian authorities said.

A recent report from the Eurispes research agency said the annual drug profits for the organized crime group represents 3 percent of Italy's GDP. The combined profits from 'Ndrangheta and fellow mafia groups, Cosa Nostra and Camorra, represent 10 percent of the country's GDP.
