ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, April 25 (UPI) -- Damage to six buildings in Alexandria, Egypt, discovered Thursday was believed to have been caused by illegal digging for artifacts, officials say.
A 29-uear-old suspect was arrested after police found he had several clay pots, Ahram Online reported. The pots appeared to be centuries old.
No deaths or injuries were reported due to the building damage. Investigators found a large hole under one building that appeared to be the work of an unofficial excavator.
Building collapses have become common in Egypt, with most blamed on poor regulation of construction standards and the illegal addition of extra floors in existing buildings.
Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt, was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. on what had been a small town and became the center of the Hellenistic world after his death. It was the capital of Egypt for centuries.
