MUSCAT, Oman, April 14 (UPI) -- A court in Oman sentenced a man who practiced sorcery to eight years in prison for causing the deaths of two people a ritual.
The defendant, who was identified only as a Tanzanian national, was arrested in December at his home after neighbors reported hearing loud screams coming from the house, Gulf News reported.
When police arrived, they found seven people lying unconscious in a room filled with toxic smoke. Two people died from inhaling the smoke, which was made by the burning of incense mixed with poisonous herbs.
The defendant was arrested and police confiscated books, incense, herbs, candles and solutions used in the practice of black magic.
Another person was arrested and charged for allowing the house he rented out to be used for sorcery rituals.
The defendant was sentenced Saturday to seven years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and one year for practicing medicine without a license. He was fined $2,597 and will be deported when he gets out of prison.
