Art exhibit in Spain accidentally damaged

SEVILLE, Spain, April 14 (UPI) -- A sculpture at a Spanish art museum was damaged when an elderly woman tripped and fell into the artwork, officials said.

The sculpture, titled "Ghost Gu Coming Down the Mountain," created by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei in collaboration with Romanian-American artist Serge Spitzer, consists of 96 aligned jars, the Local.es reported.

On Thursday, the woman fell into the work at Andalusia's Contemporary Arts Center in Seville, breaking one of the jars, Local.es reported.

Some of Ai Weiwei's work is protected by security ropes and alarm systems, but the damaged sculpture was exhibited so that members of the public could walk around it and examine it more closely, Local.es reported.

The museum's director had the room with the jars closed off after the accident and Ai Weiwei had not yet responded to the news about the damage to his work, Local.es said.
