At least 7 dead in roadside blasts near Sunni mosque in Iraq

BAGHDAD, April 12 (UPI) -- At least seven people were killed and 25 were wounded Friday in two roadside bomb attacks near a Sunni mosque about 40 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

Investigators said the explosions were set off as worshipers were leaving the mosque in Kanaan, Diyala province, CNN reported.

Martin Kobler, the top U.N. envoy in Iraq, condemned the attack in Diyala, where Sunni partisans have stepped up attacks on Shiite Muslims, the U.N. News Center said.

"These brutal acts of violence, particularly in such sensitive areas, will not undermine the true and deep belief in peaceful co-existence among the people of Diyala," Kobler said in a statement.
