Police returned fire, killing the five, including a suspected crime leader. Five assault rifles and combat paraphernalia were found in the vehicles, the National Safety Commission said.

Residents in the town of Apatzingan were fired on twice as they commemorated the anniversary of the death of a revolutionary figure, police said.

Police shot one gunman although it was unclear if he died from his wounds.

In that incident, police said they recovered a .50-caliber rifle, an AK-47 assault rifle, and two pistols.

The same group of celebrants came under fire again later. Eight people died and six civilians and two police officers were wounded.
