PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, April 10 (UPI) -- Haiti's minister of finance and economy, Marie Carmelle Jean-Marie, resigned Wednesday morning after being on the job about a year, officials say.
She did not detail the reasons for quitting in a letter sent to Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, The Miami Herald reported.
Her resignation was effective immediately.
While Jean-Marie was considered by many Haitians and the international community to be one of the more competent members of the Haitian government, she had encountered difficulty in her efforts at large-scale reform of the management of the country's finances and to put the country on the path to economic stability.
Billions of dollars in pledges have yet to be received from the international community and money-laundering legislation has stalled in Parliament. More recently, Lamothe issued $432 million in no-bid contracts after Hurricane Sandy hit last year.
