Iran opens uranium-processing site

TEHRAN, April 9 (UPI) -- Iran announced Tuesday it opened a new uranium-processing site to mark National Nuclear Day days after nuclear negotiations with P5+1 failed.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia -- Germany and Iran concluded two days worth of nuclear negotiations last weekend in Kazakhstan. U.N. nuclear inspectors said there may be a military dimension to certain parts of Iran's nuclear program, an allegation the Iranian government denies.

Now Iran has a new uranium-processing facility and a uranium mine in the central province of Yazd, state-run television reported.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, said the country only enriches uranium for peaceful energy needs.

"Enrichment is part of the rights of the Iranian people, whether we're talking about 5 percent or 20 percent," he said, referring to the percentage of enrichment.

Five percent is used for power plants while 20 percent is required for making a bomb, CNN reported.
