JERUSALEM, April 8 (UPI) -- The Wiesenthal Center said it added two men who escaped to the United States after World War II to its Most Wanted Nazi War Criminals list.
Efraim Zuroff, director of the Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, said Hans Antanas Lipschis and Theodor Szehinskyj were added to the list this year.
Lipschis was extradited to Germany 30 years ago and he is now being questioned for his role as a guard from October 1941 to 1945 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Haaretz reported Monday. He is accused of participating in mass murder and the persecution of civilians.
The Wiesenthal Center said Szehinskyj served as an SS guard at the Gross-Rosen concentration camp in Poland, at Sachsenhausen in Germany and in Warsaw. He is accused of taking part in the persecution of civilians.
Szehinskyj also fled to the United States, where his citizenship was revoked in 2000 and he was to be deported, Haaretz reported, though no other country has agreed to take him.
"During the past 12 years, at least 99 convictions against Nazi war criminals have been obtained, at least 89 new indictments have been filed and well over 3,000 new investigations have been initiated," Zuroff said.
"Despite the somewhat prevalent assumption that it is too late to bring Nazi murderers to justice, the figures clearly prove otherwise and we are trying to ensure that at least several of these criminals will to be brought to trial in the coming years."
