THANE, India, April 7 (UPI) -- Indian authorities said Sunday they have arrested nine people suspected of conspiring in the illegal construction of a high-rise building that collapsed.

The building collapsed Thursday, killing 74 people.

The suspects included two builders, police officers and municipality officials, the BBC reported.

The suspects were accused of ignoring building code violations during the construction of the seven-story building, which was occupied by several families even though construction work was still under way, CNN said.

The builders allegedly paid bribes to police officers and municipality officials to construct the building in the Mumbai suburb of Thane, the BBC said.

Police said the nine will be formally charged with culpable homicide and causing death by negligence.

Building collapses are common in India, the BBC said, and poor construction practices are often to blame.
