Montreal police arrest 279 in protest

MONTREAL, April 6 (UPI) -- Montreal police said they arrested 279 people for participating in an illegal protest meant to draw attention to the city's restrictions on demonstrations.

A large group of people gathered Friday in a park adjacent to a subway station in downtown Montreal, protesting a city law that makes such demonstrations illegal if the group doesn't provide authorities with an itinerary for their gathering.

The law also makes it illegal for protesters of any sort to cover their faces.

Police herded protesters onto buses, where most were processed and released, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., said.

Three individuals were charged with assault. No injuries were reported.
