Indian building collapse death toll -- 72

MUMBAI, April 6 (UPI) -- The death toll climbed to 72, including 26 children, Saturday as rescuers ended a search of the debris of a collapsed illegal building in India, officials said.

Search and rescue operations ended after crews dug into the basement level of the crumbled building, CNN reported Saturday.

Before suspending operations, rescuers pulled a woman from the rubble alive. A 10-year-old crawled out of the debris Friday.

Another 42 people were injured when the building collapsed Thursday evening in Thane, 6 miles north of Mumbai.

The bottom half of the 8-story building was occupied, even though construction had not been completed, said Manoj Gohad, a senior local official.

Witnesses said construction of the building began just six weeks ago, the BBC reported. The eighth floor was still under construction.

A police official said substandard building materials appeared to have been used.

More than 100 people are reported to have been pulled alive from the rubble.
