Dissidents protest in Russia

MOSCOW, April 6 (UPI) -- Protesters rallied Saturday in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, in support of dissidents arrested during a demonstration against President Vladimir Putin.

Police said there were about 600 protesters in Moscow and 150 in St. Petersburg, RIA Novosti reported. Sergei Udaltsov, a leader of the Left Front, said 1,500 people gathered in Moscow.

Both demonstrations had permits.

More than a dozen people were arrested last year during a protest May 6 in Bolotnaya Square in Moscow before Putin was inaugurated for his new term as president. They face charges that include inciting public unrest and assaulting police.

Demonstrators held up photographs Saturday of those arrested last year.
